First-Timer’s Guide to a Husky Safari in Rovaniemi: What to Expect, Step by Step

Never been on a husky sled before? Here is everything you need to know, from booking your first ride to what happens after you arrive.

You Have Never Done This Before. That Is Completely Fine.

Most people who arrive at Santa’s Husky Rides have never been on a husky sled before. Many have never even been to Lapland before. That is exactly what this guide is for — to walk you through the whole experience, step by step, so you arrive feeling calm, prepared, and ready to enjoy one of the most memorable things you will ever do.

The short version: it is easier than you think, more exciting than you expect, and absolutely worth doing. Now here is the longer version.

Step 1: Book Your Spot in Advance

Santa’s Husky Rides operates by time slot, and slots fill up quickly — especially in December and January. We strongly recommend booking online before you arrive in Rovaniemi. You choose your date and your preferred time slot (between 10:00 and 15:00).

You can also walk in without a booking if slots are available on the day, but this is not guaranteed. In busy periods, walk-ins may not get a spot. Booking in advance gives you complete peace of mind.

You can book up to 8 hours before your chosen time slot.

Step 2: Getting to Santa’s Husky Rides

Santa’s Husky Rides is located directly inside Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle, at Joulumaantie 4, 96930 Rovaniemi. It is approximately 8 kilometres from Rovaniemi city center.

  • By bus: Take bus number 8 from the city centre. Journey time is about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • By taxi: Around 10 to 15 minutes from the city centre or airport.
  • By hotel shuttle: Many hotels offer shared shuttles to Santa Claus Village. Check with your accommodation.

Search for “Santa’s Husky Rides” in Google Maps to find the exact location within the village.

Step 3: Arrive on Time

This is important: you must arrive at the start of your booked time slot. Husky rides run on a schedule, and if you arrive late, we cannot guarantee your place.

We recommend arriving 5 to 10 minutes early. This gives you time to find the meeting point and get comfortable before your experience begins.

Step 4: Check In at Reception

When you arrive, go to the reception and tell the staff your name and booking time. A member of our team will welcome you, confirm your booking, and explain what happens next.

This is a good moment to ask any questions you have. Our team speaks English and is happy to help with anything — from where to stand to what to hold on to in the sled.

Step 5: Get Seated in the Sled

One of our staff members will seat you in the sled and make sure you are comfortable. You will be given a warm blanket to cover your legs. Snow goggles are also provided.

The sled seat is low and cosy. You do not need to do anything — just sit back, hold on to the sides if you like, and enjoy the ride ahead.

If you are visiting with a partner or friend, you will share a sled. Solo travellers may share a sled with other guests outside their party.

Step 6: The Husky Ride

When the musher is ready, the husky team sets off. There is a moment of noise — the dogs bark and pull with excitement — and then you are moving, and everything becomes quiet.

The sound of the runners on snow, the sight of pine trees covered in white, the cold air on your face, and the power of the dogs ahead of you — it is a very special feeling. Most guests say it is hard to describe, but easy to love.

The ride covers 2,5 kilometers and takes approximately 8 to 12 minutes. The musher controls the sled and the team throughout. You just sit and enjoy.

Step 7: The Husky Information Session

After the ride, you will head inside to our warm indoor space for a short session about wonderful Alaskan Huskies. You will learn about the breed, their history, how they are trained, and what their daily life looks like at the kennel.

This is a relaxed, informal part of the experience. Feel free to ask questions — our team loves talking about the dogs.

Step 8: Hot Juice and Cookies in the Kota

The last part of your visit is the most warming. Head into our traditional Finnish kota hut for hot juice and tasty cookies. The kota is a round wooden hut with a fire in the middle, and it is one of the cosiest spaces you will ever sit in after being outside in the Arctic cold.

This is your time to relax, share your photos, talk about the ride, and smile. It is a lovely, gentle ending to a wonderful experience.

Frequently Asked Questions from First-Timers

I am nervous about the dogs. Should I be worried?

Not at all. Husky sled dogs are extremely friendly and sociable. They are used to being around many different people every day and are excellent with adults and children alike. Your guide will make sure you feel comfortable at every stage.

Can I take photos during the ride?

Yes! But we suggest securing your phone or camera before the sled moves, as the start can be slightly bumpy. A wrist strap for your phone or camera is a good idea. Remember: cold temperatures drain phone batteries quickly, so keep your phone in an inside pocket when you are not using it.

What if I am scared of heights or enclosed spaces?

The sled ride takes place on the ground level through open forest. There are no heights or enclosed spaces involved. If you have other specific concerns, please contact us before your visit and we will do everything we can to help.

Is the ride bumpy?

The trail is groomed and generally smooth. The start can feel exciting as the dogs set off with enthusiasm. Once the team is running, the ride is smooth and gliding. Most guests are surprised by how peaceful and quiet the experience is once you are moving.

What if the weather is very bad?

Santa’s Husky Rides operates in all normal winter weather, including snowfall and cold temperatures. The experience is magical even in falling snow. In rare cases of extreme weather (very high winds, dangerous conditions), we may need to make changes for safety. We will contact you as early as possible if this happens.

I have a disability or limited mobility. Can I still do a husky ride?

Please contact us before booking if you have specific mobility or accessibility requirements. We want to help as many guests as possible enjoy the experience and will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Is it suitable for very young children?

Yes! This is a musher-driven experience, which means the professional guide controls everything. There is nothing for the child to do except sit and enjoy. Many families bring children as young as two or three years old. Make sure young children are dressed very warmly.
